Mixing Methods and Data Types: Analysing Open-ended Questions with MAXQDA

Date

Friday, March 4th, 2016, 10.00 a.m. – 1.00 p.m.

For Whom

For anyone who is interested in systematically analysing responses to open-ended questions asked in online surveys and techniques for combining different types of data.

Requirements

MAXQDA basics taught in the workshop “Analysing Qualitative Data with MAXQDA Starter I” .

Overview

A commonly used method of data collection is to ask open-ended questions within an online survey. Thanks to new technology this has become possible where previously the constraints of recording and transcribing such responses made it difficult and expensive. While it is well known how difficult it is to write a good closed question with a balanced and exhaustive set of fixed responses, it appears to be much simpler to phrase an open question. The problem then shifts to the process of analysis. A significant part of this session will be devoted to exploring how various tools within MAXQDA may be used to simplify such analysis, make it more accurate, and help to identify any nuggets of original thought included in the responses. From that example of mixing methods (using quantitising tools on what is essentially qualitative data) the session will move on to examine ways in which different types of data may be combined within MAXQDA projects. This will include digital audio files, focus groups transcripts, survey responses, newspaper articles, and geographical locations. If data of one type may meaningfully inform our interpretation of data of another type then it should be helpful to find easy ways to examine both in close proximity.

Goals

After attending this workshop, you will have some clear strategies for analysing the qualitative elements in survey responses and some ideas for organising and linking a variety of data types.

Content

  • Preparing and importing online survey data into MAXQDA
  • Using word frequency, lexical search and autocoding tools for preliminary analysis
  • Using simple and complex query tools to check and refine the analysis and output results and reports
  • Setting-up different types of data in MAXQDA projects and linking them together
  • Using MAXQDA to help one form of data to inform the analysis of another

Laptop

Please bring a laptop with MAXQDA 12 (Windows or Mac) installed to this workshop. The free demo version is sufficient.
